The Passion Play, the story of Christ's last days on earth, has been performed in Union City since 1915 and is now in its 95th season. The Passion Play originated in Union City when a group of German and Swiss immigrants in this area decided to present a Passion Play as an offering to world peace. Lead by their pastor, Reverend Joseph Grieff, they modeled their play on the Passion Play performed in Oberammergau, Germany since 1634. Before the play, we will have lunch at the beautful Waterfront Restaurant overlooking the Hudson River in North Bergen. You will choose your entree at the restaurant with a choice of: Chicken Francese, Flank Steak or Salmon

We will start our day at the Essex County Courthouse. Built in 1906, this magnificent building, recently restored is a prime example of the "City Beautiful Movement". We will visit an opulent courtroom before we stroll through the parkland around the building. Next, we will have lunch at the Newark Club. After lunch we will go to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart for a brief visit before entering Branch Brook Park. Over the past four years, the Essex County government has planted 2,000 trees bringing the total to 4,000 trees of 26 varieties. Wew ill stop in the Forest Hill Historic District to visit a "Queen Home" built in 1906 and ending our revisit to the "Golden Age of American Cities"
